The need (present situation)
The heavy rains and the strong winds caused massive destruction to property, especially in Cuddalore district in TN and Puducherry. The cyclone Thane crossed the coast between Cuddalore and Puducherry carrying along with it torrential rains and gusts of wind of up to 140 kmph. Cyclone Thane pummeled the Tamil Nadu coast and the Union territory of Puducherry on Friday December 30th morning, leaving in its wake 35 dead besides untold devastation. The cyclone made its landfall between Puducherry and Cuddalore district in the state, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rains all along the coast.Cuddalore, Tiruvallur and Villupuram districts along Tamil Nadu's northern coast and Puducherry were the worst hit - several huts and small houses collapsed like a pack of cards, main arterial roads were damaged and uprooted trees and electric posts were strewn across streets and pavements. “Tamaraikulam” was also not spared. Swift devastation and injuring some elderly residents, the entire model village suffered huge damages to electricity cables, solar heaters, roof tops of the houses, the paddy field and much more. As a result, the elderly residents have no adequate covering from rain and sun thus putting them at risk of greater health hazards.
To avoid further risks to the lives of the elderly residents, there is urgent need for all the facilities to be restored immediately.
